This is the discipline now called Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO. It overlaps with classic SEO but it is not the same thing. The crawlers are different. The ranking signals are different. The unit of success is not a click, it is a citation. And the tactics that worked beautifully for a Google ten-blue-links result (keyword density, exact-match anchors, doorway-style listicles) range from useless to actively harmful inside an LLM context window.

What ‘GEO’ actually means in 2026

Generative Engine Optimisation is the practice of structuring your site, content and entity profile so that large language models cite, paraphrase, or directly recommend you when a user asks a question relevant to your business. It is the answer-engine successor to SEO, and the two now coexist in every serious content strategy.

The terminology in our industry is still settling. You will see ‘GEO’, ‘AEO’ (Answer Engine Optimisation), ‘LLMO’ (Large Language Model Optimisation) and ‘AISO’ all used roughly interchangeably. We use GEO because it is the term adopted in the most-cited 2024 academic paper on the subject (Aggarwal et al., Princeton and Georgia Tech), and because it is the one Google itself now uses internally.

TL;DR — GEO is to AI search what SEO is to the results page. Same goal (be the source the engine picks), different signals (citations, entity strength, structured answers), different unit of success (citation, not click).

The four engines you have to win in 2026

There is no single ‘AI search market’ anymore, there is a fragmented set of generative answer surfaces, each with its own crawler, citation logic and update cadence. Optimising for one does not automatically optimise for all of them. The four that matter for a UK business in 2026 are:

  • Google AI Mode and AI Overviews — by far the largest in raw query volume. Crawled by Google-Extended (LLM training) and the regular Googlebot (live retrieval). Citation logic blends classic ranking factors with novel ‘deep search’ fan-out queries.
  • ChatGPT Search — uses OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot for live retrieval and GPTBot for training. Heavy emphasis on Bing’s index, structured data and entity disambiguation. Citation cards link out, so it drives real referral traffic.
  • Perplexity — uses PerplexityBot. The most generous of all engines about citing primary sources (every answer is footnoted). Strongly favours recent, well-structured, semantically clean pages.
  • Microsoft Copilot / Gemini / Claude — smaller in raw share but disproportionately influential among knowledge-worker decision-makers. Each has its own retrieval stack but they tend to follow the same content-quality signals.

The signals AI engines actually use

After two years of running controlled experiments across client sites, we have settled on a 12-factor model that maps to what AI engines actually retrieve and cite. The signals are a superset of classic SEO, meaning everything that worked for Google still helps, but you now need to add a layer of AI-specific structure on top.

  • Entity strength in the model’s training data (Wikipedia, Wikidata, news mentions)
  • llms.txt / llms-full.txt presence and quality
  • Schema.org markup, particularly Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Organization and Product
  • Direct, declarative H1 that matches the question being asked
  • ‘Answer-first’ opening paragraphs (the inverted-pyramid form, not the long-windup blog form)
  • Explicit dates (publishedDate + updatedDate) and authorship
  • Citation-ready facts (numbers, dates, named entities, original data)
  • Robots and AI-bot policy that allows the engines you want to show up in
  • Semantic HTML (proper heading hierarchy, lists, tables, summary blocks)
  • Open Graph + Twitter Card metadata (used by some retrievers as fallback summaries)
  • Internal link graph that reinforces the entity (topic clusters, hub-and-spoke)
  • Off-site presence: original research that gets cited, podcast appearances, GitHub repos

The 90-day GEO sequence we run for clients

Trying to do all twelve factors at once is the single biggest mistake we see in-house teams make. Below is the sequenced plan we run for new clients. It assumes you already have a credible technical-SEO foundation; if you do not, fix that first.

  • Days 1–15 — Audit. Run the AI Citability Checker on your top 50 pages. Identify which engines you currently appear in and establish the baseline.
  • Days 16–30 — Foundation. Ship llms.txt and llms-full.txt. Add Article, Organization and FAQPage schema sitewide. Audit and tighten H1s. Make sure publishedDate + updatedDate are exposed in the DOM and in JSON-LD.
  • Days 31–60 — Content rewrite. Take your top 20 commercial-intent pages and convert each opening into ‘answer-first’ form. Add a TL;DR summary block. Build out an FAQ at the bottom of each. Refresh anything older than 12 months.
  • Days 61–75 — Entity work. Build out the Wikipedia / Wikidata footprint where eligible. Get cited in 5+ industry publications. Add structured author bios with sameAs links. Push original data, even small studies trigger citations.
  • Days 76–90 — Measure. Track citation share monthly. Set up alerts for new mentions. Iterate on the pages that moved the needle.

What stops working (and why we tell clients to stop doing it)

Several long-standing SEO tactics are now actively counterproductive for AI search. The clearest examples:

  • Long, branded blog intros (‘In today’s fast-paced digital world…’). LLMs strip these out before answering, but they hurt your answer-extraction accuracy because the model has to work harder to find the substance.
  • Listicles padded with weak entries to hit a number (’27 Ways to…’). LLMs reward the strong entries and ignore the rest. You are better off writing 8 strong points than 27 mediocre ones.
  • Keyword-stuffed body copy. The new retrieval models do semantic matching, repetition of the head term gives you nothing and reads as low-quality.
  • Programmatic doorway pages with thin variations. AI engines aggressively dedupe near-duplicates and the surviving page tends to be the one with the most original substance.
  • Hidden FAQ schema (markup that does not match visible content). Google has flagged this as spam since 2023; LLMs simply ignore it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. The two are now layered. Classic SEO still drives the largest share of measured traffic for almost every business we work with. GEO is the additional layer that determines whether you appear when a user asks the question inside an AI surface, and to write content that earns citations from AI engines and clicks from the results page at the same time. The good news is that almost every signal that helps with GEO also helps with classic SEO.
How long does it take to see results from a GEO programme?
Faster than classic SEO. Because LLM retrieval is recrawled frequently and because there is far less competition for the optimisation signals, we typically see citation share start to move in 4–6 weeks for clients with a credible existing site. Pages that were already indexed and ranking on Google often start being cited inside ChatGPT or Perplexity within 14 days of the rewrite.
Do I need to block AI bots, or allow them?
It depends on your business model. If you sell content (publisher, course creator, paid newsletter), the right move is usually to allow the retrieval bots (PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended for AI Overview retrieval) and block only the training-only bots. How do I measure if GEO is working?
Three layers. First, the AI Citability Score, a per-URL audit that tells you whether a page is technically ready to be cited. Second, citation-share tracking, counting how often your domain appears in answers to a defined prompt set. Third, downstream business signals, branded search lift, direct traffic from cited URLs, and the new ‘Referrer: chat.openai.com / perplexity.ai’ analytics segments.
What is the single highest-leverage thing to do first?
Rewrite the opening paragraph of your top 10 commercial-intent pages into ‘answer-first’ form, the inverted-pyramid summary that gives the model a clean, citable, declarative answer in the first 80 words. Pair that with a properly marked-up FAQ at the bottom and you will see citation lift inside 30 days. Everything else is amplification.
